The dispute concerning the Morocco–Senegal AFCON 2025 final raises a sports law question: how do match events, disciplinary rules and appeal routes interact? Understanding the matter requires separating published decisions from arguments discussed.

This article distinguishes officially documented facts from analytical questions. It does not present the outcome of the CAS appeal as already known.

The CAF decision of 17 March 2026

In its statement of 17 March 2026, the CAF Appeal Board announced that it set aside the initial disciplinary decision and upheld the Moroccan federation’s appeal. It found a violation of article 82 and applied article 84, declaring Senegal to have forfeited the match, with a recorded result of 3–0 in favour of Morocco.

The statement also deals separately with incidents attributed to the Moroccan side. Those sanctions and their changes must be distinguished from the forfeiture question; they do not by themselves resolve the appeal against the result.

The appeal registered before CAS

On 25 March 2026, the Court of Arbitration for Sport confirmed registration of the Senegalese federation’s appeal against CAF and the Moroccan federation. Its statement says Senegal seeks to set aside the decision and be declared winner of the competition.

A note dated 30 September announced a closed hearing for 8 October, with proceedings in French. The cited procedural notes do not determine the outcome. Later announcements and any award should be checked on the official CAS website.

The sporting result and disciplinary classification

An analytical issue is the distinction between events on the field and the classification of conduct by a disciplinary body. The discussion cannot be reduced to the score or a general assessment of fairness.

A review would require the applicable rules, official reports and full reasons. It should identify the question before each body: establishing facts, classifying conduct or applying a regulatory consequence. These questions do not prejudge the CAS answer.

The arguments discussed in the initial article

The earlier article contrasted a reading focused on resumption of play and stability of the result with one considering whether collective interruption could fall within forfeiture rules despite a later return.

These are analytical arguments, not proof of what the parties pleaded in a closed hearing. The scope of the provisions and their application require the actual file. No isolated circumstance necessarily establishes that the appeal must succeed or fail.

Proportionality and the right to respond

A critical review may examine reasons, consistency of the sanction and opportunities for each party to respond. These issues require procedural documents and cannot be resolved solely from media statements.

The availability of an appeal does not itself prove that every guarantee was respected at every stage. Conversely, an allegation of a procedural failure must be supported.

Frequently asked questions

Is CAF’s statement a CAS award?
No. It describes CAF’s appeal decision, distinct from arbitral proceedings.

Does an announced hearing mean an appeal is won?
No. A procedural announcement does not determine the outcome.

Can this matter decide another sports dispute?
Comparison may suggest questions, but the facts, rules and decisions of each file must be examined.
